MHS Practice Tests: Melbourne High Edutest Diagnostic

Practice tests for the Melbourne High School (MHS) Year 10 entrance exam: what each Edutest paper asks, how long you get, and a free diagnostic to find out where you stand. Big Brain does not host an official Edutest PDF. Official registration and any sample information Edutest publishes lives on Edutest. Timed practice (Edutest-style questions in the question bank, not a downloadable booklet) lives on the platform.

What is specific to Melbourne High

Melbourne High is the boys' selective school in South Yarra, founded in 1905. The Year 10 sitting is for current Year 9 students and uses the same five Edutest papers as Mac.Rob, Nossal and Suzanne Cory. This page is that paper. It is not the Year 9 ACER Selective Entry exam.

Year 10 is not the main intake. Most students enter at Year 9 through the ACER Selective Entry exam, and Year 10 fills a limited number of extra places. Current Year 10 students can also sit for Year 11 entry, on the same five Edutest papers. Some schools add an interview or a written application after the exam; that step depends on the school and is not another practice paper. Dates and fees stay on Edutest and the school. We do not republish them here.

What the practice tests cover

The Year 10 selective exam is Edutest, not ACER. Five tests. The table matches Big Brain's VIC Selective Year 10 exam record. Topic lists for each paper are on the exam guide. Shared Edutest patterns (how a percentile works, writing timing) are on the Edutest exam guide.

Free diagnostic, then the question bank

Start with a diagnostic, not a full mock. A 30 to 45 minute diagnostic on the free diagnostic page maps which of the five papers is actually costing marks. The sitting mixes speed (Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning) with slower reading and two written pieces. Practising the strongest paper first is how students stay busy without moving.

After the diagnostic, timed section practice in the question bank is the method. Mathematics is 60 questions in 30 minutes. Verbal Reasoning is the same pressure with words instead of curriculum. Reading Comprehension is 50 questions in 30 minutes, including sentence correction, so skimming the passage and ignoring the grammar items leaks marks. Written Expression is two pieces of 15 minutes each, with no planning or reading time, and you do not choose the genre — the paper does. Practise creative and persuasive, on a 15-minute clock, or the set style is the one you have not written.

How to run a practice week

• One timed mathematics or numerical-reasoning set, then review every miss. Speed without an error log repeats the same leak.
• One verbal-reasoning or reading set. Keep the clock. 60 verbal questions in 30 minutes does not survive an untimed run.
• Two written pieces, one creative and one persuasive. Stop each at 15 minutes, planning included.
• A full five-paper mock only once the section times feel ordinary. Starting with full mocks burns stamina before the question types are familiar.
