John Monash Science School (JMSS) is a Melbourne school for students keen on science and technology. Open to students from grades 7 to 11, JMSS offers advanced subjects, elective sciences, and co-curricular activities.

Cutting-Edge Technology at JMSS

JMSS builds technology into its teaching. The school offers technology-focused courses where students gain hands-on experience and apply their skills to real-world problems.

Programs like Robogals, which encourages students to learn about robotics, and Mathematics Modelling, which focuses on solving complex problems using mathematical techniques, are two examples. Both build technical knowledge along with critical thinking and problem-solving.

Elective Sciences: Explore Your Interests

JMSS students choose from a wide range of elective science subjects. These courses go into specialised topics in depth, beyond the typical high school curriculum.

Elective subjects offered at JMSS include:

  • Terraforming Mars: Discover the science and challenges of making Mars habitable.
  • Biotechnology: Learn about the latest developments in genetic engineering and medical technologies.
  • Astrophysics: Explore the wonders of the universe, from black holes to the big bang.

These electives are hands-on and ask students to think like scientists, which prepares them for university study and STEM careers.

University Extension Sciences: An Early Start on University-Level Learning

Motivated JMSS students can take University Extension Sciences: university-level courses taken while still in high school. They go deeper into each scientific discipline and give students an academic head start.

Students can choose from subjects such as:

  • University Extension Biology
  • University Extension Physics
  • University Extension Chemistry
  • University Extension Planet Earth & Climate Change

These courses, taught in partnership with universities, allow students to engage in challenging material while earning university credits. They suit students aiming for a career in science, technology, engineering, or medicine.

Extended Investigation: A Year-Long Research Opportunity

In the Extended Investigation program, students spend a year designing and carrying out their own scientific research project, the way a working scientist would.

Students choose a topic, formulate research questions, collect and analyse data, and write a full scientific paper. Students come out with independent research and scientific writing skills, which help when applying for university or scholarships.

Co-Curricular Programs: Learning Beyond the Classroom

JMSS runs a wide range of co-curricular programs. Students pursue personal interests, play sport, or do community service, and build leadership and teamwork skills along the way.

Programs at JMSS include:

  • Olympiad Training Workshops
  • Big Science, Little Scientists
  • Dance with Data

These activities give students room to develop talents beyond academics.

Why Consider JMSS?

At JMSS, science and technology sit at the centre of the timetable. With advanced academic programs, hands-on electives, and university-level courses, the school suits students who want to pursue science while preparing for university and a career.

Students who want a harder academic challenge will find it there.
